Technology career profile

Software test engineer

Checks that software works before customers see it. Designs tests, tries deliberately to break the product, and reports faults clearly to developers.

Student snapshot

Software test engineers check whether an application behaves as intended and help teams reproduce and fix failures before release.

What the work actually involves

Read rules, design test cases, find bugs, reproduce failures, automate checks, and protect users from broken releases. Skills to notice: Basic computer and smartphone use, Record-keeping and documentation, and Data handling and spreadsheets.

A day in the life

A tester turns a requirement into test steps, tries expected and unusual inputs, records a reproducible bug, and retests the fix.

Where this work happens

Test engineers work with developers, designers, and product teams in software companies and IT departments. Testing may be manual, automated, or both.

Who this may fit

You may enjoy noticing edge cases and describing a problem so someone else can repeat it. Testing involves patient repetition and clear evidence.

India pathway after Class 10 and Class 12

A named India training example is the Directorate General of Training (DGT) Software Testing Assistant Craftsmen Training Scheme course. Its version 2.0 curriculum lists one year and Class 12 with Science and Mathematics, a vocational subject in the same sector or equivalent. Source checked 1 November 2026: Source: dgt.gov.in . Admission to that course is not an employer's promise of a test-engineer job. Compare current computing programmes and vacancies, and build evidence through reproducible bug reports, expected results, failed tests and patch retests.

Skills to build in school

  • Use a computer or phone to organise files and finish small tasks.
  • Write neat notes, dates, and next steps after each task.
  • Use simple tables, charts, and checks to understand data.
  • Build small programs and explain how they work.

Portfolio or evidence

  • Create a test sheet for a fictional to-do list app.
  • Include one everyday case, one blank-input case, one long-text case, and one keyboard-only case.
  • Record the expected and observed result without using real accounts or personal data.

Reality checks

  • Testing software requires clear steps another person can repeat.
  • A fault may appear only when requests overlap.
  • Ask whether training includes timing, expected results, retesting and useful bug reports, beyond memorising testing terms.

Career mission

Find a missing book-reminder test

Practise anticipating normal use, mistakes, edge cases, and accessibility needs.

This 15-minute paper mission helps students try a safe piece of Software test engineer work through Notice, Try, and Reflect steps.

Fictional input pack

  • Fictional reminder app spec: Tab order Book label → Date → Save → Help. Blank book label: error “Enter a book label”, focus Book label. Blank date: error “Enter a date”, focus Date. Valid date: Saved screen. Simulated failure card: pressing Save with a blank date shows Saved anyway. This is invented failing behaviour, not an observed real software defect.
  1. Notice: This is a made-up situation. You can begin without knowing this career already. Read the supplied input pack for “Find a missing book-reminder test”. Note the source labels, fixed details and anything left unknown.
  2. Try: Draw tests for the supplied book-reminder screen. Test a valid label and date, a blank label, a blank date and keyboard navigation. Record the expected screen for each using the supplied rule. Work on paper or a digital page and aim to finish in 15 minutes. The estimate is a guide, not a deadline.
  3. Reflect: Mark a possible failure on your paper screen. Write repeatable test steps and the expected result. Do not claim that you ran a real application.
After your attempt: check an example

Example bug record: blank date, press Save, expected error and Date focus, simulated actual Saved. Include reproduction steps and the specification. A plausible failure story is not evidence of a live defect.
