Skilled trades career profile

CNC machine operator

A CNC operator may load and run an approved programme, check the setup record and compare the first part with the drawing under the workshop's procedures. Editing a programme, setting up a machine and operating it can be separate trained responsibilities. The exact job decides which of these tasks an operator is authorised to perform.

What the work actually involves

Read drawings, set machines, measure parts, cut material accurately, inspect tolerances, and maintain tools. Skills to notice: Basic computer and smartphone use, Machine operation and setting, and Measurement and reading instruments.

A day in the life

A CNC operator may check that the drawing, setup sheet, material, and machine program all refer to the same part revision. They prepare the setup with the trained team, run approved checks, inspect the first piece, and monitor production for tool wear or other changes.

Where this work happens

You may work in machine shops, tool rooms, factories, training workshops, and production floors. It can suit students who like machines, computers, measurement, and calm focus around moving equipment.

Who this may fit

You may enjoy precise work that combines computers, machines, drawings, and measurement. The role also needs attention, routine checks, and willingness to pause a job when documents or results do not match.

India pathway after Class 10 and Class 12

Directorate General of Training (DGT) lists the CNC Machining Technician CTS trade as a two-year course with Class 10 completion as the entry qualification. This is a specific vocational option. Verify the institute’s current affiliation, machine and safety training, assessment, and local admission notice before enrolling.

Skills to build in school

  • Use a computer or phone to organise files and finish small tasks.
  • Learn machine parts, controls, and setup steps on paper first.
  • Measure carefully and read scales, gauges, or values.
  • Choose the right safety gear and explain why it matters.

Portfolio or evidence

  • Build an evidence folder with part drawings, measurement notes, tool names, and machine-safety checklists.
  • Add supervised practice photos if allowed.
  • Reflect on one setup or measurement mistake corrected.

Reality checks

  • CNC work needs care with the job packet and approved programme.
  • A tool-list mismatch is a reason to check the controlled setup.
  • Ask whether a course prepares operators, setters or programmers, and how each responsibility is assessed under supervision.

Career mission

Prepare a part inspection card

Practise precision, sequencing, and checking a process before tools are used.

This 18-minute paper mission helps students try a safe piece of CNC machine operator work through Notice, Try, and Reflect steps.

CNC-B revision C (mm)
+--------------------------------+
|  (O) <--- 30 centres ---> (O) | width 25
+--------------------------------+
             length 50
No measured sample values or acceptance tolerances supplied.

Fictional input pack

  • Fictional bracket drawing CNC-B rev C: length 50 mm, width 25 mm, two hole centres 30 mm apart. Units mm. Inspection fields: drawing/revision, required dimension, sample reading, question. No measured values or acceptance tolerances are supplied.
  1. Notice: This is a made-up situation. You can begin without knowing this career already. Read the CNC-B rev C bracket dimensions, units and missing tolerances in the input pack.
  2. Try: Make an inspection card for the three supplied dimensions. Keep drawing values separate from blank measurement fields. Add a question about the missing acceptance tolerances. Work on paper or a digital page and aim to finish in 18 minutes. The estimate is a guide, not a deadline.
  3. Reflect: Check every number against the drawing reference. Do not invent a measured result or accept a part. Did preparing a repeatable check or spotting missing information interest you?
After your attempt: check an example

A complete planning card includes 50, 25 and 30 mm, with separate spaces for future readings. The drawing alone cannot establish whether a manufactured bracket meets a tolerance or how to machine it.
