Skilled trades career profile

Automobile technician

Services, diagnoses and repairs cars and commercial vehicles — engines, brakes, steering, suspension and electrical systems. Uses diagnostic equipment to find faults and road-tests after repair.

Student snapshot

An automobile technician compares the customer's exact description with the previous job card and authorised diagnostic results before documenting the next inspection or repair plan. A service advisor helps coordinate customer communication, while the trained technician carries out the technical work. Neither a quotation nor a warning light alone proves a cause.

What the work actually involves

A car technician checks the driver’s report against test records. They find which system needs more checks, record the work and test an approved repair. They explain what was found and what is still unknown. Skills to notice: Hand and power tool use, Mechanical diagnosis and repair, and Electronic diagnosis and repair.

A day in the life

An automobile technician may review a customer’s concern and service history, inspect the vehicle using approved procedures, and compare test results with the manufacturer’s information. They repair or replace parts, check the work, and record what was done. Road tests and safety-critical repairs are handled by qualified workers.

Where this work happens

Car service centres, dealership workshops and independent repair garages use vehicle lifts, diagnostic equipment and service records.

Who this may fit

You may enjoy practical work with engines, brakes, electrical systems, and diagnostic tools. The job also needs careful listening, methodical checking, and a strong safety focus because repairs affect people on the road.

India pathway after Class 10 and Class 12

A related vocational option is Directorate General of Training (DGT)’s Mechanic Motor Vehicle CTS trade. DGT lists it as a two-year course with Class 10 Science and Mathematics, or a same-sector vocational subject, as the entry qualification. Check the current institute, workshop and diagnostic-tool practice, affiliation, and state admission notice. The course does not qualify someone for every vehicle specialization automatically.

Skills to build in school

  • Learn tool names and safe handling before practical work.
  • Compare supplied mechanism drawings and list questions for an authorised test.
  • Trace supplied paper circuits and compare expected and observed states.
  • Choose the right safety gear and explain why it matters.

Reality checks

  • Vehicle service begins with what the driver actually reports.
  • A previous check may not reproduce today's warning.
  • Ask how training separates intake, authorised diagnostics, repair work and customer communication.

Career mission

Map the main systems in a car

Connect a driver’s needs to the systems a technician services.

This 12-minute paper mission helps students try a safe piece of Automobile technician work through Notice, Try, and Reflect steps.

FRONT REAR
+------------------------------------------------+
| Engine | Cabin + steering | Rear lights |
+---O----------------------------------------O---+
Brakes at wheels (conceptual positions only)

Fictional input pack

  • Simplified car cutaway, front→rear: [engine]—[cabin/steering]—[rear lights], with brakes at the wheel positions. Function cards: engine provides movement power. Brakes slow wheel rotation. Steering changes wheel direction. Lights communicate or illuminate. Drawing is conceptual.
  1. Notice: This is a made-up situation. You can begin without knowing this career already. Read the supplied input pack for “Map the main systems in a car”. Note the source labels, fixed details and anything left unknown.
  2. Try: Make a labelled vehicle-systems map on paper. Use a quick sketch, simple labels, or a small table to show four system labels, the basic job of each, one connection between systems, and a note that trained technicians inspect real vehicles. Keep the result small enough to finish in 12 minutes.
  3. Reflect: Check your work: the map explains the systems at a high level and gives no driving, repair, or road-testing instructions. Improve one small part, then write one thing you would like to ask someone in this career.
After your attempt: check an example

Example: steering and brakes both affect how a moving vehicle responds, while lights help communicate. The map does not explain safe driving or diagnose a fault. Real checks belong to trained technicians.
